The Blissful Yogi

"The whole world is going crazy.. but, I sit at my window and look at the sea. The sea is timeless." - a beautiful, old soul I spoke with today..

Here on the Sunshine Coast we are so lucky - no matter where you are, the sea is almost always in sight. I grew up here in a house perched above the ocean and as long as I can remember, the ocean has always been a steadying presence in my life.

As a young child I remember listening to the waves to soothe myself to sleep.  As a teenager I would go down to sit at the beach, listen to the waves, and breathe in the fresh, salty air and clear my head. As an adult the ocean is still a huge source of comfort and grounding for me. Whenever I am feeling stressed, sad, angry, or confused I seem to find myself sitting on a beach, with the wind of my face, staring at the sea.

What this woman said today really touched me. The sea is timeless. It anchors us to this Earth, no matter how crazy things seem to be going in the world.

We get caught up in the world of possessions, money, jobs, achievements, worrying for the future, lamenting the past.. we are troubled by war, government, famine, environmental destruction (all legitimate concerns)... however, these things can give us an unsettled energy and sometimes it can be hard to shake.  Sometimes it's hard to get back to the ground. 

Yoga helps. Breathing mindfully helps.  Family and friends can help.

And nature. Nature is an anchor which can bring you back down to the Earth.

When you need to ground yourself, or need a place to clear your head, find trees. Find the ocean, a waterfall or a stream. Find the stars. Lye on the grass. Get in touch with the Earth. Forget the world which keeps happening around us. Let time slow down.  Find the moment by connecting with the beauty which resides right in front of our noses.

Bliss is accepting what is, but sometimes the world can be overwhelming.  In these moments know that no matter how crazy the world is going, nature still holds places of stillness and silence. Timeless and true. Waiting for you to come, sit and stare.
